Description
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Castiglion del Bosco is a wine of great finesse and elegance. Sourced from the Capanna vineyard, located in the north-west area of the appellation, this release is a beautiful interpretation of a critically-acclaimed vintage.
2016 was characterized by a mild winter and spring with higher than average minimum temperatures. This led to a slight advance in budding and a beautiful vegetative expression of the vines. The summer was cool and mild, allowing the ripening to continue slowly and without interruptions. Ripe tannins, richness in colour and good acidity have therefore characterised the Sangiovese of this excellent vintage. The harvest began slightly earlier but ended around mid-October, as often happens in great vintages. The result was a Sangiovese that produced intense but elegant wines of remarkable structure and balance.
The complexity and beauty to this is really something with cherry, walnut, tobacco and cigar-box character. Sweet cherries. It’s full-bodied and deep with super intensity and power. Layered and beautiful. Really refined tannins. Some whole-berry fermentation gives this added character. Goes on for minutes. Try after 2025. (99 points)
